RFC and e.firma in Mexico: prepare for your first consultation
A practical starting point for Americans and Canadians in Puerto Vallarta: questions, records and the difference between two procedures.
Are RFC and e.firma the same?
No. RFC identifies your tax registration; e.firma identifies you and enables electronic signatures in supported procedures. Having an RFC does not mean you already have e.firma, nor does it establish every filing obligation. Start by checking whether you have a tax status certificate and what activity it lists.
Start with your activity
Write down what you will do in Mexico: provide services, operate a business or receive property income. Note the start date and whether you have already received payments. Nationality, immigration documents and tax circumstances are separate facts for your adviser to assess. Another foreign resident’s arrangement is not a reliable template for your own.
Prepare a document inventory
List your identification, applicable immigration records, address evidence, home-country tax identification and any existing SAT registration. This is a consultation checklist, not an exhaustive statement of official requirements. The relevant SAT procedure determines originals, representation and translation requirements for your circumstances.
Questions to ask before booking a procedure
Ask which procedure applies, which documents are missing, who must attend and which steps depend on an official appointment. Separate public procedure charges from professional support fees. If you already have an RFC, review its existing status before attempting a new registration.
Keep a clear record
File acknowledgements and certificates by date. Keep e.firma files and their password under your control; do not upload them through an open enquiry form. Agree an appropriate channel and authorization scope with your adviser. A useful consultation ends with a sequence of steps, responsibilities and missing documents rather than a guarantee of approval.
